Hazare calls for Jail Bharo movement on April 13

hazareEven as the entire country including the Bollywood celebrities, social activists, youth and women rallied round the Gandhian Anna Hazare in his anti-corruption crusade, the aged social activist today announced a ‘jail bharo’ movement across the country on April 13 and gave a call for the people to participate in it in full strength.

Hazare, who continued with his fast unto death protest on the fourth day today, resorted to this step as government rejected his demands of chairmanship of the joint drafting committee being given to a civil society member and a formal official notification being issued by the government on the subject.

“You should participate in the agitation keeping in mind Mahatma Gandhi. There should be no violence anywhere,” Mr. Hazare said and asked especially the unemployed youth to participate in the movement with enthusiasm as the morning breakfast and two meals would be available for them in the jail.

Hazare said corruption-fighting agencies like CBI, vigilance committees, and various committees are under the government control and no corrupt IAS or IPS official or a politician was punished till date because of this. “Just for this reason, corruption has been continuing unabated in the country,” he said. “All these agencies must be brought under the purview of Jana Lok Pal.”

Government has refused to give an official notification on the formation of the Joint Drafting Committee and also rejected the demand to make a civil society member as its chairman. Mr. Hazare made it clear that he was not interested in becoming chairman or a member of this committee.

Hazare wrote to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday suggesting names of former Chief Justice of India J.S. Verma and Justice Santosh Hegde for the chairmanship of the committee to draft the new Lokpal bill.

Meanwhile, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi also said she was very much with the movement and will continue the fight along with Hazare.
