Sonia Gandhi to Respond to US Federal Court by Jan 2

Sonia Gandhi is asked to respond by January 2 by the Federal Court in US for the allegations of the SFJ.

The Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) filed a complaint against the AICC President Sonia Gandhi against her allegedly protecting the party leaders from the legal action against them for their involvement in the riots against Sikhs after the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984.  They complained of the ‘specific instances of impunity, promotions and party tickets’ to Congress leaders and police officials involved in 1984 violence.

The SFJ’s complaint falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Court in USA according to the Alien Tort Statute and the Torture Victim Protection Act of 1992.  It gives a chance to the survivors of the human rights to the abused to sue persons who are the cause of it in US.

When Sonia Gandhi visited US for medical treatment in the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York on September 9, the Federal Court sent summons on her through the hospital staff and her security personnel. But the attorneys representing Sonia Gandhi challenged the service of the summons whereas SFJ insists that the summons were served on her.

Now, the Federal Court gives time till January 2, 2014 to Sonia Gandhi to respond to the summons served.
