Antony orders CBI probe into VK Singh's charges

Army Chief General V.K. Singh’s allegations that he was offered a bribe of Rs.14 Cr from an equipment lobbyist rocked Lok Sabha today leading to its adjournment till 2 PM.

Reacting to the demands of the opposition members, Defence Minister A.K. Antony announced a CBI probe into the allegations. “The issue is serious and a CBI will be conducted,” he said.

As soon as the Lok Sabha met this morning, BJP members prominently raised the issue of General VK Singh who said in an interview to the popular national daily ‘The Hindu’ that he was offered a bribe of Rs.14 Cr from an equipment lobbyist.

Singh in his interview to the daily said he was offered the bribe on the condition of approving a purchase deal. “I have reported the matter immediately to the Defence Minister AK Antony,” he said in his interview.

As the members demanded a statement from the Government on the issue and blocked the proceedings of the House, AIADMK and JD (U) members also raised the issue displaying the copies of ‘The Hindu’ carrying the interview of the Army Chief.

With pandemonium prevailing in the house over the issue, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House. Rajya Sabha too was adjourned after it witnessed similar noise over the issue. (J)
