In tragic incident, two workers were killed and seven others injured in a building collapse in Hyderabad.

According to the police, the incident happened when the slab of an under-construction school building collapsed in Old City. The incident happened around 1 a.m. on Saturday.

The injured were rushed to Osmania General Hospital. The bodies of the two victims have been retrieved. They were identified as Nandu and Venkataiah, both from Wanaparthy of Mahbubnagar district. Their bodies were shifted to OGH morgue for autopsy.

The school belonged to Maheshwari Trust. It was being constructed in a land of nearly 2,000 square yards in Hussainialam area. The old school building was being demolished.

“Our inquiries indicated that Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities didn’t give permission for construction of the building,” South zone DCP V. Satyanarayana said. The Trust had a long pending legal battle with the GHMC over the school land.

The Trust secured a verdict in its favour but the GHMC authorities moved the Supreme Court, the police said. “Since lorries laden with construction material cannot be brought to the construction site due to traffic congestion, the Trust was continuing the construction work in night time.

“They planned four-floor building and laid the concrete slab of the first floor late in the night. Some work was still on and labourers were at the site when the slab caved in around 1 a.m.” the DCP said. Death was instant for the two labourers.

Police, with the help of locals, took up the rubble removal work. A case of rash and negligent act resulting in death was registered against the Trust under Section 304-A of Indian Penal Code.
