Food poisoning in IIT – Powai, about 600 IITians sick/hospitalized

IITMumbaiNearly six hundred students belonging to three different hostels with a common mess, at the IIT Mumbai reported to have had fever, vomiting, headache and body ache due to food poisoning. Many students felt the dinner served could have been the cause for this.

IIT-B spokesperson Jaya Joshi, who confirmed that food poisoning cases were reported, added, as of now, the situation is under control. Officials at the IIT have sent the stool samples of the sick students as well as drinking water served in the mess for testing.

Nearly 2,000 students live in IIT-B's hostels 12, 13 and 14, which share a common mess. For the dinner, Chinese food, which is not often on the menu, was served. The fateful dinner comprised of fried rice, noodles, gobi Manchurian, rice, dal and an optional dish of chicken.

A source confirmed that around seven doctors were called from their homes to help treat the students. While most recovered with due medication, some of them had to take up more medical help to recover. The students' mess council emailed a 'food poisoning questionnaire' to students in hostels 12, 13 and 14. The canteen contractor was associated with the campus the last three years, but not an incident of food poisoning had come up, but students regularly complained dissatisfaction about the menu.
