Jana Gana Mana… completes 100 years

Indian National Anthem Jana Gana Mana, penned and composed by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore has completed 100 years today.

While the lyric was first unofficially recited at the Annie Besent Theosophical College at Madanapally in Chittor district of AP when the Nobel laureate camped there, it was officially recited at the Indian National Congress session at Calcutta on Dec 27, 1911. The song was granted national anthem status on January 24, 1950.

As a tribute to the national anthem which has won the UNESCO’s appreciation as the best national anthem in the world, some enthusiasts in Tirupati, under the leadership of educationist and lawyer Mr KS Vasu, began a 10-hour non stop recitation of the song this morning.

The continuous recitation of the national anthem began at 7 am at the Mahati Kalamandiram and will close at 5 pm. The recitation is being attended by the representatives of the Guinness book of world records. (JUBS)
