Six Arrested for Degrading National Anthem at IFF in Kerala

After three students were allegedly thrashed by a group of 20 people for not standing during the national anthem in Chennai, another case has been registered.

Six people have been arrested for not standing up during the national anthem at an international film festival in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram.

The police said "the men did not budge even when the policemen present at the hall requested them to stand up asĀ  per a recent order of the Supreme Court. The IFFK organizers and Director of Chalachitra Academy, Charmin Kamal, also asked them to stand, but they refused."

"The incident took place this evening at the Kannakakunnu Nishagandhi Auditorium, an open-air theater, where an Egyptian movie was being screened. The men were professionals in the 25-30 age group, one man was aged 52", the police said. They were formally arrested and later released on bail.

In a separate incident, members the BJP youth wing, Yuva Morcha, filed a complaint on some students who had refused to stand up for the national anthem on December 9.

On Dec 11 Sunday, a group of college students were manhandled and threatened inside a movie theatre in Chennai for not standing. The students were charged with insulting the national anthem for which they have to go to jail for three years. No case was filed against those people who attacked them.

The order came from Supreme Court on November 30 that all movie theatres should play the national anthem before screening every movie.
