Sunitha Williams space walks to records

The Indo-US astronaut Sunitha Williams excels the records of Peggy Whitson's, by walking in space for the sixth time. The astronaut was on a mission along with her Japanese colleague Akihiko Hoshide on her sixth space walk to repair a faulty power distribution unit, as per the PTI. The whole exercise lasted for nearly 6 hours and 28 minutes and with this the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) specialist has been out there for a  a total of 44 hours and 2 minutes. On the other Whitson had  39 hours and 46 minutes to her credit of walking in the space. Both of them had walked six times in the space.

With this Williams holds three records for the eves in space travel. The Gujarati-Slovenian offspring is settled in the US and is the second woman from Indian background to be selected by NASA, after late Kalpana Chawla. Incidentally she was also the second astronaut from a Slovenian parent after Ronald M Sega. The Indo-US astronaut holds the distinction for longest spaceflight (195 days), number of spacewalks (six) and total time spent on spacewalks (44 hours and 2 minutes).

With this spacewalk the astronauts from NASA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAEA) have repaired the Main Bus Switching Unit (MBSU) that was hampered last week by a possible misalignment and damaged bolt threads. (With inputs from internet-AW AarKay)
