The year 2012 may also see the ushering in of a faster broadband technology that connects people on the go without being wired. Nation-wide mobile number portability is expected to be ready by June 2012.

The new telecom policy, which promises roaming-free mobile phone services in a one-nation one-tariff environment, with nation-wide mobile number portability, is expected to be ready by June 2012. The draft New Telecom Policy 2011 had also said price of spectrum would be discovered through market related processes.

While announcing the draft New Telecom Policy 2011 in October, telecom minister Kapil Sibal had said that the new policy would be ready after incorporating comments from all stakeholders by the end of this year. The year 2012 may also see the ushering in of a faster broadband technology that connects people on the go without being wired.

Almost all major telecom operators in the country, including Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, Aircel, Tikona and Qualcomm are working aggressively to launch 4G or fourth generation telecom services. RIL said it would launch broadband wireless access services sometime during 2012. Tikona too is gearing up to launch 4G services in 2012 with TD LTE (Long term evolution) as its backbone.
