JNU row: Kanhaiya not involved in anti-India event- Report

Regarding ongoing JNU issue, the university Students Union chief Kanhaiya Kumar was not involved in any anti-India sloganeering on campus, says Delhi police intelligence wing report, contradicting the claims by the authorities.

On the charges of sedition, the JNUSU president was arrested and is currently in police custody. The intelligence wing report does not also refer to any direct or indirect link of the JNU activists with Pakistan-based terrorist outfit, Lashkar-e-Tayyaba.

But union minister Rajnath Singh still strictly said that, LeT backed the JNU protests and the police was investigating the LeT’s role in the protests.

Delhi police special branch’s situation report, which mentions the FIR against Kanhaiya Kumar filed at the Vasant Kunj police station, says the JNU authorities were alerted about the programme, which turned into a political controversy later.

The report clearly states that several Left-backed unions active at JNU had been “mild and non-reactive”, but the two unions, the Democratic Students Union and Democratic Students Front, were “volatile” and “reactive” and were “indulging in anti-national and anti-social activities”.

Police quick action against Kanhaiya Kumar has led to a number of questions.

JNU row: Report questions police swiftness

Now the question haunting is, why the police acted so swiftly against Kanhaiya Kumar, when slogans and protests with an anti-national and objectionable religious tone had been raised at the campus earlier too.

On October 6 last year, the report states that, the special branch ACP met Sudhir Kumar Sopory, the then JNU vice-chancellor and the duo discussed various subjects, including CCTV surveillance at the campus, to avert any untoward incident.

The report further specifies that the duo interacted about the raising of slogans by students’ groups and their participation in protests inside the JNU campus.

“Many times such slogans/protests have an anti-national colour. It is reflected through objectionable posters prepared mostly on computers and affixed at hotels or on the JNU campus. Sometimes, such posters are found to be hurting patriotic/religious sentiments. It was also discussed that objectionable/anti-national activities of the members of the Democratic Students Union (DSU) have to be curbed by the JNU authorities with the help of the police,” the report states.

On November 12 last year, another Intelligence report which is part of the situation report, states there are a number of Left-supported student unions active in JNU and clearly mentions that most of these are non-reactive and mild in nature.
