Women in good numbers enroll for US Navy!!

Increasing women enrollment in the U S Navy has forced the naval authorities to take up rigorous general–neutralize exercise on its warships. As a part of the exercise, U S Navy proposes to scrap urinals from new war ships. The new design is to be incorporated in the Gerald R Ford class of aircraft carriers. And the first fleet shall be operational in late 2015.

Scrapping the urinals will save not only space and cost but also will save the US Navy of maintenance costs which are escalating frequently. Urinal drainpipes, clog more than toilets do and are smellier and more expensive to maintain.

Now this will help cadets to easily switch restrooms, or heads, as they are called on the high seas, an easy adaptation for changing gender make up of crews.  This is among the Navy's first steps to gender-neutralise its carriers, with most current ships commissioned before it began deploying women on combat ships in 1994, according to CNN.

Captain Chris Meyer, manager of the Future Aircraft Carriers Program for the Naval Sea Systems Command, said there's a lot more at play in the design objectives than (making the toilet areas) gender-neutral,' he told CNN. 'We're saving money in maintenance costs, and we’re improving quality of life.'

The saved space would benefit the cadets with more living area in their cubicles. As per the present dynamics, old Nimitz class naval ships have more than 100 sailors into each berthing but on Ford carriers, the numbers will be closer to 30-50 each, although the spaces will be smaller.
Bathrooms will be attached to berthing as well, whereas on many current ships sailors have to relieve themselves in a separate area of the boat. However the first, three Ford carriers are to be pressed into service between 2015- 2027 and would cost $37 Bn to Navy.(With inputs from internet- AW AarKay)
