Telangana bandh plunges rural Maharashtra under darkness

PowerStationMaharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) has to impose load shedding for the shortfall of 3500-4000 MW. Considering the present scenario, the peak hour demand is 16,000 mw while the availability is around 11,000 MW. The reason attributed is short supply of coal, in the wake of the Telangana agitation, leaving much of the rural areas in darkness with 13 to 14 hour power cuts and cities for three to eight hours.

Stoppage of coal from the Singareni mines in Andhra Pradesh has affected production of power at Parli. The state procures 24 racks of coal but due to the ongoing crisis has brought down the delivery to 10-11 racks per day. The floods at Orissa also had its toll on the power production at Koradi, Chandrapur, Paras and Khaparkheda plants, by cutting off supplies from the Mahanadi coalmines.

Amid power crisis, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar rushed to New Delhi on Wednesday to meet Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and others. The result is the state is being assured to get 700 MW in the next few days.
