The second Test between India and New Zealand at Wellington was stuck by the visitors. India won the Toss and elected to field first. Ishant Sharma removed openers Fultion and Rutherford without troubling the scorecard. From here NZ never looked back to get in the game. Wickets fell at regular intervals and none of the NZ batsmen stood up to score more runs. Kane Williamson was the highest with 47. NZ were bowled out at 192 runs, Ishant bagged six wickets, his second five wicket haul of the series and Shami picked four wickets.

In response to NZ, India made a poor start. Opener Murali Vijay was removed cheaply Tim Southee for 2. Then stepped in Pujara along with another opener Shikhar managed to push the scoreboard. Shikhar completed half century while Pujara was dismissed ten minutes before end of the day at 19. Ishant stepped as night watchman and remained unbeaten with opener Shikhar. At the end of day one India posted 100 runs for the loss of two wickets.
