JD Lakshminarayana, the name that strikes terror in corrupt hearts

Born in Srisailam, the son of an engineer, a meritorious student passed out of National Institute of Technology, REC, Warangal but Engineering wasn't the cup of tea he wanted. His aim was always IPS. Topping the Civil Services exams, this lad, JD Lakshminarayana went on with his dream becoming an IPS officer passing out from the Maharashtra cader in the 1990 batch. He was selected as the Superintendent of Police for Nanded and later appointed under anti-terrorism squad where he proved his mettle.

He is still one of the the joint directors of CBI who strive day an night to bring out the corrupt poiticians and individuals working towards the development of the nation. Lakshminarayana is an officer who fears nobody, biased to no caste or community, and listens to no one. He is extremely covert with his work and operations which at often times are unknown to third ear/eye until the last minute when he launches the raid.

He became popular with the case of Satyam Ramalingaraju. With his expertise in being able to dig out files related to the Satyam scandal, he could accuse Ramalingaraju directly and arrest him immediately. He next took up the files of Gali Janarthanreddy. No one even knew who he was. His investigations were all so underground that no one knew that Janarthanreddy was under the scanner. Surprisingly one day, he was in Bellary near the luxurious mansion of Gali who was caught reading a newspaper in a golden chair.

One interesting point about his style of working is that he is extremely secretive and tries to blend in with common men to avoid any suspicion. He travels in buses and other common modes of transport rather than a personal or a government vehicle. His dedication to the work leaves him little room to worry about grandiosity. With a smile, you can always spot him carrying over a file in a simple dress scurrying over to the office. Being terse, yet very friendly and police with the media, he is known to be right on the point when he expresses something about any developments. When it comes to work, you can never know what he is working on. That is his style of work.

Jaganmohan Reddy, the president of YSR Congress Party had little idea that he would come under his scanner. Lakshminarayana's name is one to be feared by all the corrupt officials. He is not the regular venal officer in a high position that you know. No amount of money can influence his decision. While the Emaar-Jagan case was still being discussed, it was handed over to the CBI for further investigations on July 12, 2011. Lakshminarayana has moved on to the case, returning from a reunion with his buddies, alumni of the REC, Warangal. Jaganmohan Reddy who was extremely influential later through his newspaper published phone records of the CBI officer, saying that he was in plans plotting his death. However, the officer was witty enough to come out of the case, without being a victim. He alleged that his privacy was being violated after the phone records were published on a national newspaper even before he was found guilty.

With his dedication and work style, Lakshminarayana was awarded the Indian Police Medal in 2006. After being sent on deputation to Hyderabad for five years, the department felt the need to retain him for another couple of years. His deputation was extended for two more years. After his seven years he has managed to tighten the noose around Jagan's neck with the Emaar properties case. Bail is a farcry for the YSRC president, despite being in a highly influential position. Ensuring that Jagan cannot escape the wrath of the constitution, he is now in plans to leave the final chargesheet to his successor, and rejoin his parent department in Delhi.

His efforts to make India and Andhra Pradesh better in terms of corruption, he took the hardworking path. Some leaders have took to fasts, protests, some other blamed politicians, questioned their action in the public, vociferously agitated against them but achieved nothing. JD Lakshminarayana on the other hand was not the complaining type. He was not threatened by danger. He “IS” the danger.

He is one man who would make you think, “We need more Lakshminarayanas in India”. Making India proud since 1990.
