On Wednesday a Chinese visitor at the biggest gem and jewelry exhibition of Sri lanka in Colombo had attempted to steal a diamond worth $14,000 by swallowing it. The police arrested him immediately after the organizers had spotted his bizarre attempt.

The 32-year-old man had unsuspectingly asked the owner of a stall to show him the jewel closely on the opening day of Facets Sri Lanka, an annual exhibition in the capital Colombo.

After taking the diamond off the display cabinet he seemed to study the diamond and then in a second had put it inside his mouth. The police said that they were alerted by the owner who noticed the man gobbling the diamond.

The man was arrested and taken to Colombo National Hospital to be administered with laxatives in an attempt to retrieve the diamond worth Rs 1.8 million to be precise.

Sri Lanka does not have diamond mines of its own but is popular for the large gem and jewelry industry, expecially the blue sapphires.
