Income Tax Searches Reveal Rs 89 Crore Channeled For RK Nagar Bypoll Elections

The income tax searches held at the premises of an associate of Tamil Nadu Health Minister, C. Vijayabaskar, has revealed a scattering of about Rs 89 crore, for distribution of voters, in the RK Nagar Assembly Constituency.

The RK Nagar bypoll elections, are scheduled on April 12.


The documents, grabbed during searches at the premises of an accountant of the Minister, showed details of Rs 89 crore, and the money is being distributed to RK Nagar, through party officials, according to sources.

“The money was distributed through many party officials, for distribution to voters,” sources said.

An official stated, “We even found the names of some party men who are also ministers. The official even added the copies of voter’s list, with entries like, which voter should be paid. This was recovered during searches at the MLA’s hostel premises.

Meanwhile, searches that started yesterday, has ended in almost 50 locations. The officials said, tasks like statement recording, however will continue.

A media report said, around Rs 4.5 crores cash and Rs 85 crore worth gold were seized from the residence of Vijayabaskar.

Vijayabaskar, hours after his residence was raided, in his defence said, that the raid was politically motivated.

Vijayabaskar told the media, “That he was innocent, and is fully co-operating with the IT officials. I showed all my documents and they were unable to find anything. They were threatening me. My child wanted to go to the school, but they were not allowed. This is politically motivated. The IT department is harassing me.”

The supporters of Vijayabaskar protested on the roads, after the raids. The police used water cannons to control the crowd.

The raids by the IT officials, were conducted at Vijayabaskar’s Greenways road residence and also at other locations including Pudukkottai and Trichy.

The IT raids, were even conducted on Tamil film actor, Sharathkumar, and an MLA, in connection with a tax evasion investigation.
