Rajapaksa lost Presidential Elections

The Indian ocean island nation, Sri Lanka will have a new president as the current head Mahinda Rajapaksa lost the elections to his rival Mithripala Sirisena. The final result of the elections are yet to be declared but Sirisena could win with the polls with over 4,00,000 votes. Mr Rajapaksa had already left the official President's office Temple Tree to make way for the new President to assume duties.

The 69 year old Rajapaksa had ruled Sri Lanka for over decade and called for elections two years early who had confidence on the people. But the voters looked for change and brought down Rajapaksa. Like never before, Sri Lankan people turned up for voting in large numbers. According to the reports, Sirisena has secured 51 per cent of vote share while Rajapaksa got only 46 percent.

Mithripala-Sirisena

Rajapaksa was one of the undisputed President for Sri Lanka. He was also controversial for removing Supreme Court Chief Justice for not making amendments in the Constitution to eliminate term limits. He had tight grip over the power and made it difficult for Sirisena for address public gathering in big venues.

Coming to the new going to be President, Sirisena was once a longtime loyalist of Rajapaksa but defected the party in November 2014. He worked as Health minister in the past and later took his own route to contest the Presidential elections.
