100 Days of Samaikyandhra Movement in Seemandhra

Seemandhra people have been protesting for 100 days against the Center's decision on July 30, to bifurcate the State. In the above photo Samaikyandhra activists sat in the formation of 100 at the Clock Tower Center in Anantapur to mark the 100th day of the agitation.

The Congress Working Committee has taken a decision to bifurcate the State of Andhra Pradesh which is the first linguistic State to form in the country.  Now the same Federal Government that unified the regions in which the people talk the same language in 1956 is now stepping forward to disintegrate it.  After the decisionof the CWC the matter has gone to the Cabinet which formed a GoM to make observations about the situation in the State regarding the bifurcation.

The congress Government has been adamantly sticking to its decision in spite of the prolonged protests in Seemandhra for Samaikyandhra.  APNGOs initiated the stir among the employees which was supported by all Seemandhra employees and RTC employees that caused a deadlock and brought the State functioning to stand still in the Seemandhra region.  Even the cyclone and floods and plight of the employees without salaries for over 2 months and business circles with revenue did not weaken the movement.

Usually a movement is backed up by a political party but the Samaikyandhra movement came from the people of the region from all the sections.  Not only the activists are not backed up by the politicians but the activists made it difficult to the politicians.  The political leaders stayed back at Hyderabad or at Delhi but did not go back to their constituencies without a firm promise to give but the matter is in the hands of the Congress party high command and it is not clear to any leadr in the party.  Activists attacked residences of the political leaders.

Another notable point is the Chief Minister’s stand.  Kiran Kumar Reddy has been fighting against bifurcation right from the moment CWC took the decision.  For the first time in the history of Congress party a Chief Minister of the party wrote a letter to the President and the Prime Minister opposing the decision of the Government.  He has been called today to brief him and make him ready for the undisputed passing of the bifurcation note in the Assembly.

The opposition parties in the State are also against the bifurcation and against the unilateral decision taken by the Government.  But still the Congress Government at the Center wants to go ahead sticking to its decision in spite of the blame from all other parties that all it is to gain power in the State which slipping out of hand.  But the political scene is not indicating favorable conditions to the Congress party in the State.  Seemandhra is ruled out but even Telangana region is doubtful as the expected merger of TRS with Congress party is not assured in the wake of TRS getting politically strengthened after the decision on the formation of Telangana state is announced.

The very congress party leaders are hoping that at least the high command must be clear about the steps it is taking.

In the wake of the agitation in Seemandhra the congress party though not showing outwardly is going ahead stepping cautiously. An all party meet is called and opinions were solicited from all parties and associations.  Based on the opinions gathered the Home Ministry has made its note in a book form consisting of 400 pages to present to the GoM.
