NCRB report on Rape: What is wrong with us?

The demand for fast track court procedures to punish severely those who sexually assault woman is indeed justified and much needed if we look into the statistics of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the year 2011.One will be definitely shocked to know that 2050 people or 5.4% out of total 37929 accused were released without any trial. Overall 26436 persons were chargesheeted, a 69.7 per cent figure against the total number of arrests and about 9443 persons or 24.9% were still under investigation at the end of the year 2011.

In the same year, the total number of persons under trial including those from previous year stood at 126753 but only 21489 trials were completed (a one-sixth conversion rate). In all, 5724 people were convicted which stood at 26.6 per cent when weighed against those who stood trial. The total number of pending cases stood at 104997, 82.8 per cent of those which went to trial.

These statistics are clearly depict a gloomy picture of our justice system, with some politicians who refuse to take any accountability and blame it on women instead of punishing the savage rapists, the condition and the overall image of India is becoming darker day by day. If this continues our so called proud traditions of respecting and worshiping woman as goddesses will merely become nothing less than a joke.

Ironically in a survey conducted by a news channel almost two third of the Policemen in the NCR, who take oath to protect citizens think that most woman who report rape cases are basically blackmailers..! According to them most cases are actually related to 'consensual sex' and later they report rape for getting money from the accused.

Seriously...How absurd is that...!
