Fresh FIR in Thalassemia affected children case

The CBI registered a fresh FIR in the case of 23 children stricken by Thalassemia who allegedly were HIV positive after blood transfusions at Junagad Civil Hospital last year. The cases were registered on Tuesday, a senior official spoke. CBI police superintendent said, “An FIR was registered today at Gandhinagar, making slight modifications to the original complaint. We have included a charge under section 304 of IPC, culpable homicide not amounting to murder.”

23 children suffering from Thalassemia had contracted HIV following the blood transfusions in the civil hospitals in September 2011. 2 of these kids died later. High Court has directed us to register fresh FIR after investigation and the reports would be submitted in the Ahmedabad's special CBI court.

The court bench after going through the case said, “ the present scenario is an exceptional one in the history of the country. 23 innocent kids had turned HIV positive merely due to the negligence of the authorities of civil hospital.”

“The state police's investigation was far less than satisfactory and hence we have escalated the case to the CBI police to increase the credibility of the investigation”, the bench said.
