Bihar rickshaw pullers abet sleuths to stop crimes

Bihar Police have utilized the services of the banned rickshaw pullers to reduce the crime rate in the state. The crime rate has been increasing at alarming levels. The government was facing sharp criticism from general public.

As per statistics of the state government, 2,500 murders, 1,035 cases of theft, 747 highway robberies and more than a thousand kidnappings, including 42 for ransom, were reported in the first nine months of last year.

So the police decided to involve rickshaw pullers of Rohtas, who would trek people in the nights. These pullers would disguise as passengers and some as pullers, move around the areas at the dead of night and inform police once they notice any illegal activities. Their tip-offs have, so far, helped police bust two dreaded gangs of criminals and solved two cases of robberies committed in the areas, prompting police to reward the new "crime busters" with cash and blankets, quite useful in the continuing spell of bone-chilling cold.

District Superintendent of Police, Rohtas agreed that they utilized the services of the pullers. DSP Manu Maharaj added, `with their help, police have been able to bust two notorious gangs of criminals, and recovered looted goods which included hard cash and valuables, such as gold, silver jewelleries, TV sets, DVDs, cameras, and 11 mobile phones.’
