Wild elephants create havoc in Mysore city

ElephantsTwo wild elephants, drifting from the nearby T. Narsipur forest range, entered the city of Mysore early this morning and went berserk on its outskirts. They trampled a 55-year old person to death and terrorized the residents in several colonies of the city, according to higher education minster S.A. Ramdas.

The two jumbo elephants entered the city around 6 am and freely roamed the residential areas causing panic in the city to everyone. The forest staff however successfully tranquilized the two wild animals after nearly four hours and sent them to the forest.

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa announced Rs.500,000 as compensation to the family of the person killed by the elephants.

Meanwhile, the government declared a holiday today as a precautionary measure and deployed additional policemen in the suburbs of Mysore city to prevent any untoward incident again.
