Main Aur Charles Story

Main Aur Charles story is about the life of a charismatic con artist and serial killer Charles Sobhraj (Randeep Hooda), who rose to fame in the 80s and being called as the ‘Bikini killer’. Charles’ approach was to befriend his victims, mainly foreign tourists who moved across Thailand, Goa and Nepal on hippie trails, drug them and steal their passports.

Main Aur Charles Analysis

Main Aur Charles Movie Review and Ratings

Prawaal Raman has succeeded in creating the 80s environment and even managed to stylize Sobhraj accordingly. But that lacked in the script modulation. The narration lacks the grip, especially in the scenes of jailbreak and Sobhraj’s clear personality disorders. The characters are brilliantly crafted, but their nature is not exploited properly.

Following the trend of Bollywood criminal sagas, there are less dialogues and that adds as an advantage to the film. The passport snatching scene is shown with ease and truly reminds about those days, where immigration processes were so sloppy. On the whole, Main Aur Charles lacks a proper script and narration.

Performance

Randeep Hooda as the ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Sobhraj has done an amazing job. His charm and ease, can be felt on the screen. Especially his body language and accent might be tough for a few minutes, but later it delights the audience. But the way, his character was written is not up to the mark.

Adil Hussain needs a loud applause for his stupendous performance in the film. Even Amod Kanth does a good job in the interrogation scenes.

Richa Chadda as Meera Sharma does a decent job. She is a criminal law student, who is a victim of Charles’ charm and so mesmerized by him that she becomes an accomplice in his plan for jail break, with the intention of marrying him. Most of her scenes are narrated well. Nandu Madhav, Mandana Karimi and rest others are found satisfactory.

The lighting is the impressive part of the movie. Screenplay spoils the movie, but Prawal Raman succeeded in taking the audience mood to the 80s. The background score is completely a disaster and sometimes it even tests the patience of the audience in the theatre.

The production values are fine and spent what is exactly needed for the 80s concept like Main Aur Charles. Finally, script and narration is what dips down the movie.

Main Aur Charles Final Word

Main Aur Charles fails to show a potent crime drama, as the narration completely spoiled the already average script.
