Brien's heroics takes Ireland to shocking victory against Eng

In an enthralling finish of the World Cup match played yesterday at Bangalore, Ireland pulled off an improbable win beating England by three wickets. Ireland's Kevin O'Brien pulverised the English attack to record the fastest hundred in World Cup history. The all-rounder reached the three-figure mark in just 50 balls. Eventually, he made an entertaining 113 with 6 sixes and 13 fours.

In a seeminly last cause, Brien's arrival at the crease, following the loss of top five batsmen for 113 runs, changed the entire gamut of the match as he added 162 runs for the sixth wicket with Alex Cusack, who gave good support to Brien by making 47.Though the well-built all-rounder departed in the 48th over, his partner Moony ensured that the extraordinary innings of Brien did not go in vain as Ireland romped home with 5 balls to spare. England's skipper Andrew Strauss had to watch in utter dismay to see Brien taking runs at will as none of his bowling attack could not dislodge him cheaply. To compound worries for England, a total of five catches were put down by the losing team.

In fact, off-spinner Graeme Swann escaped the onslaught of Brien as he completed his quota of 10 overs by then. Swann has picked up three wickets giving away 47 runs in 10 overs. The rest of the English attack was toothless as James Anderson, Bresnan, Yardy conceded more than six runs per over in their allotted overs while Stuart Broad, who appeared in his first world cup match for England went for a distance win as he was plundered for 73 runs in 9 overs bowled by him.

Strauss's decision to bat first after winning the toss looked to be a right decision as England put on a massive 327 runs losing six wickets in the process. Jonathan Trott was unlucky to fall short of a deserving hundred as made 92 runs. Bell hit his second successive half century in the world cup, producing the second highest score(81) for his team. Kevin Pietersen collected his first fifty after being elevated as the opener.

Ireland's fast bowling-all-rounder John Mooney bagged four wickets at an expense of 69 runs in 9 overs.

England will take on the strong South African side on 6th March at Chennai while the Indian side will clash with Ireland on the same day at the same venue.
