US deserved Sandy: Muslim clerics

Anti-American Muslim clerics across the world have made a controversial and abominable statement saying that the US deserved the devastation of Sandy for ridiculing Prophet Muhammad and other misdeeds.

A few Muslims have outright gone against the statements saying that it was not Muslim-like to enjoy the sorrows of others.

An Egyptian cleric mentioned that the hurricane was a revenge of God for the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims which was the reason behind several violent protests and agitations in September.

"Some people wonder about the hurricane in America and its causes," Wagdi Ghoneim, an uncompromising cleric tweeted twice this week in the aftermath of the storm. "In my opinion, it is revenge from God for the beloved prophet," he added. There were quite a few who seconded the post but there were also good numbers who condemned it.

"God, shake the earth under their feet," one malevolent comment read but it evoked thoughtful responses like "We have brothers and friends in America - I don't wish them any harm."

Another tweet responding to the hate-tweet said that Sandy was divine intervention set to strike the United Nations in New York and the country as a whole.

"We ask God to destroy the UN building for its injustice, corruption, tyranny ... with Sandy”, a foolish tweet from a devout Muslim read.

A few understanding ones in the Muslim community pointed out that the hashtag was a representation of terrorists and not Muslims.

"This hashtag doesn't represent Muslims but represents a terrorist. We all ask God to help and save Americans," it read.

While another cleric in Saudi Arabia called the storm a force, a wake up call that urged the Americans to convert to Islam before more lives were lost. Over 140 people were killed in the storm.

"It is not legitimate and it is not proper," Grand Mufti Abdel Aziz Al Sheik told pan-Arab Al-Hayat daily.

While there are several millions in US and many other distant relatives who are grieving for the victims of the superstorm Sandy that has deprived power to over 5 million and affected the daily lives of 60 million people in the nation, a few maniacs are relishing on their woes, merely due to a movie. This is very much against their own Quran which says punish the wrong with a punishment that is equal to the crime committed. Is death of a few innocent people a worthy punishment for a movie they are not associated with? How can we have faith in humanity anymore?
