'Selfie' can cure skin problems

A study has claimed that a 'Selfie' [taking your own picture with the help of an electronic gadget] will cure skin problems more fast than visiting a dermatologist. According to a research, selfies can help identify and cure skin problems, like eczema and other skin related problems.

The study, led by April Armstrong from the University of Colorado, Denver, in the US conducted this research on 156 people adults and children who had eczema and also had access to digital cameras, computers and the Internet. 78 people visited a dermatologist while the remaining consulted a doctor through online. The online patients used to send images of their skin conditions to the experts online. The dermatologists evaluated this skin condition by looking at the images only, recommended treatments and also prescribed medicines.

After an year about 44 percent of patients who visited a dermatologist personally achieved a clearance or non-clearance while 38 percent of patients who communicated online achieved this. On the whole this study shows, online dermatology services are giving good results.

The study appeared in the journal JAMA Dermatology.
