Union Cabinet approves bill seeking quotas for SC/ST

On Tuesday, the proposal that would allow reservations to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for their promotions in the Government jobs has been passed.

The Union Cabinet at a meeting headed by Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister approved the proposal that allowed the SC/ST quota in promotions of government jobs.

This approval prepares for the introduction of another Constitution Amendment Bill in the current session in the parliament. This had been a demand of most of the parties except for the Samajwadi Party since many days.

The Prime Minister had convened an All Party meeting on August 21 where the reservation issue to promote the downtrodden castes was discussed just after the Supreme Court had quashed the reservation in promotions to SCs and STs in Uttar Pradesh.
The proposed bill is aimed at amending a minimum of four articles of the Indian Constitution which would help for the promotions of the SC/STs.

The issue was raised in the Parliament immediately after the rebuttal by the Supreme Court on April 28 by the BSP supremo Mayawati. Parliament had witnessed disruptions on the issue in the current as well as the previous session.
