7.4 Earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, tsunami warning issued

Just off the coast of El Salvador in the Pacific Ocean, a strong earthquake, 7.4 on the scale, had been felt on Monday and has reportedly generated a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 86 to the south-southwest of San Miguel while the origin was 32.9 miles deep according to information on the USGS website.
A tsunami warning had been issued in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honuras, Gautemala, Panama and Mexico.
No initial damages and injuries or deaths were reported after the earthquake struck on Sunday.

According to the Warning Center the threat extended to all Central American nations and Mexico and also predicted that it could be "destructive along the coastlines of the region".

The Civil Protection Service Director in El Salvador however begged to differ dismissing any threat of a tsunami. He also said that they registered only a 5.7 point tremor as opposed to the claimed 7.4 point tremor.

The effect of the earthquake was almost not felt in El Salvador.

The initial USGS report put the strength of the quake at 7.4, but it was later revised to 7.3. "Sea level readings confirm that a tsunami was generated," the center said
