Performance counts to be in squad: insecure Gambhir

The hero of Indian Premier League fifth season was undoubtedly the Skipper of the winning Kolkata Knight Riders, Gautham Gambhir. But if one launches to introspect the player in him, his weakness and strengths are the game. A unique proposition, that needs to be understood with an in-depth analysis. Gambhir is a person, who seldom smiles on- field. However his go-getting nature on-field is visible on all fronts. Considered to be a slow reactor to on-field fielding the star batsman has never spared his efforts at the willow.

In a recent interview Gambhir opens his mind. "I don't enjoy cricket. I just take it as a priority.. Something that I have to do," says Gambhir to NDTV. Adding, "I am very insecure because that's how I have played cricket. Since Under-14 I was told if you don't perform you will be dropped. I have started living with this system."

On a question about taking up the captaincy reigns, the successful KKR skipper felt that he is right now fit to take up test Captaincy. Gambhir said, "Yes, it's the biggest honor. (I am) Ready for the responsibility of the challenge because you want to test yourself in different challenges as well. That is where your mental toughness and your character will be tested.”

"But as I have always said a captain is only as good as his team. I think it's a successful team that makes a successful captain. It's not a successful captain that makes a successful team," he added. (With Inputs from Internet- Aarkay)
