England pulls off a stunner against the Proteas

Stuart Broad, Robin Pieterson, Trott, Chennai, Amla, Bopara, TahirEngland Fast bowler Stuart Broad injected life into England’s frailed campaign in the World Cup when he helped his side to beat South Africa by a whisker margin of six runs in today’s league match at Chennai.
Defending a meagre 171-run total, England produced a spirited bowling display to outplay their opponents for 165 runs in 47.4 overs.  The South African chase began on a strong note with openers Graeme Smith (22) and Amla (42) putting on 63 in 14 overs.

However, Jimmy Anderson brought back England into the match by claiming the scalps of dangerous AB De Villers(25) and J P Duminy for 0.  Kallis’s horrendous form with the bat continued as he could manage 15 only.  Stuart Broad and Anderson shared six wickets between them with the former picking up four wickets for just 15 runs in six overs.

Earlier England began its innings on a shaky note losing the wickets of Pietersen, Captain Strauss and Ian Bell by the fourth over itself.  Jonadhan Trott(60) paired with Ravi Boppara(52) to add 95 runs for the fourth wicket.  Later England lost its way as its last seven wickets fell for an addition of 57 runs in 45 overs.

Yet another time, Imran Tahir  pocketed four wickets for South Africa while Spinner  Robin Pieterson picked three wickets.

It was South Africa’s first loss in the tournament, having beaten the West Indies and the Netherlands comfortably in its previous matches.

England’s Ravi Bopara was declared Man-of-the-Match for his 50.

The South Africans, in its next match,  will take on the Indian team on 12th March at Nagpur while the jubiliant England team will play Bangladesh on 11th March at Chittagong.
