Should you buy the new Reva e2o?

The Mahindra Reva e2o launched a week ago but should you go for it? Is it worthy of the Rs 5 lacs+ price tag? Let us check the vehicle, inside out!

Earlier version of Reva was impracticable for all people making it a limited option for very few takers. The Mahindra Reva e2o was designed to change all that, at least they proclaimed so. With Mahindra partnering the team and the NXR concept of Dilip Chabria giving life to the vehicle, the e2o is more futuristic. This may well be on the road to be a mainstream vehicle too.

The earlier two door design remains but there is walk in access to the rear seats. Though it looks cramped, once you are inside the car, there is a decently enjoyable space for luggage and feet as well. However, you will be disappointed to learn that you have not window control on the rear seats.  The electric car takes 5hrs of charging for a full charge that can deliver around 80-90km but Reva advertised 100km.

The major drawback would be the speed. You cannot drive over 80 kmph making this an intra-city car rather than a car that you can drive to far off or on highways. Though a high quality plastic was used for the body, there are many structural flaws that made way into the nearly perfect NXR design. Digital speedo, touchscreen interface make it more futuristic than you expect it to be.

Performance wise, don't expect a super quick start or sport car specs but the car can start at a decent speed without any jerks. A boost mode on the gear level allows you for a ride that will tune your car to better performance. Acceleration till around 40kph is quite strong but it wanes after that and cannot do over 80kmph.

Handlign though isn't as sharp as a normal car would need. Suspension is soft and expect rolling into corners when you are steering them. While it might not be the perfect choice for a hatchback you can use everyday, the car will make a very good option for a four wheeler to be driven in the city.  Prices in Delhi start at Rs. 5.96 lakh (on-road).

Verdict: technically, this is a disappointment but if you are looking at environment, cost of maintenance and other such aspects, you have a winner with a little compromise.
