Finding lost love: Camera floats 6,200 miles back to owner

Lindsay Scallan in 2007 was enjoying jolly time in the warm waters of Hawaii beaches while she took a camera protected in an underwater housing to capture the beauty in the sea. However, in the deep blue sea, you should be prepared for the worst to happen and it did. She lost her camera in the waves but all was not lost. Scallan did not know her camera was only lost temporarily.

The camera washed up ashore in Taiwan, six years after the owner, a resident of Newnan, Georgia, lost it in Hawaii. An employee of China Airlines found it on the beach and started a quest for the owner. He searched the camera which was broken from the constant and extremely long exposure to moisture. However, the memory card which had protection from the camera housing as well as the underwater housing was in tact.

Douglas Cheng searched the pictures and found out that the owner of the camera took up the tour in Maui from the catamaran named Teralani 3. Cheng approached Hawaii tourism bureau and found out that the camera belonged to Scallan and that the trip was from August 2007.

The camera has not reached Scallan yet but it probably would soon be. The camera which is no longer functional shall be a great memory however, a great souvenir, from her journey. China Airlines in fact has offered a free round ticket to Scallan to go to Taiwan to get her camera. Did they think parcel was too expensive compared to the flights? Scallan is probably not even bothered since she could well have purchased more than one replacement for the 6 year old outdated camera. She says, she recently joined in a job and cannot afford any leave at the moment. But good job Cheng with your persistence.
