Inter religious marriages valid only then - Madras HC

“Either a girl or guy, should convert into opposite person’s religion and only then an inter religious marriage is valid,” the Madras high court said.

In Tamilnadu state, a Christian guy married a Hindu girl in a temple and this was severely taken by the girl’s parents. Their issue has reached Madras high court yesterday, after the parents filed Habeas Corpus petition.

The girl argued that, as she is a major and so has the right to live with the guy she prefer. The court accepted the girl’s argument, but said that, either she or the guy, among the couple, should get converted into opposite person’s religion and live in a single religion. Only then, this marriage can be valid.

Otherwise, if they decide to follow their own religion, they should get married according to the special marriage act 1954.

On the other side, the court cancelled the Habeas corpus petition, filed by the parents, saying that it is not valid.

So the new couple, who are in a thought of marrying other religion person, should concern about Madras High Court judgment and get ready to change your religion.

Hope this judgment brings the change in the way people deal the religions and thus create a feeling of equality, eliminating discriminations.
