Centre announces One Rank One Pension

Just a while, the Indian government finally announced OROP scheme, assuring an equal pension to three million military personnel retiring in the same rank with the same length of service, regardless of the date of retirement.

Upon the several days fight from the public, finally in a press conference held today, Defence minister Manohar Parrikar announced the scheme. The government took this decision to remove disparities in veterans’ pensions, by effecting the revision every five years.

The new pension scheme would be followed, having 2013 as the base year. The discrepancies if any, between the present and the previous pensioners, would be reportedly settled every five years.

OROP statement

Regarding this, to look into the various aspects of OROP including inter-services matters, the government would constitute a single-member judicial committee. In the next months, a report would be submitted on the issue.

To implement OROP, the annual payout from the government’s pocket would be in the range of Rs.8,000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore. However, the figures are expected to rise in the future years. Along with this, even the arrears are expected to show the figures between Rs. 10000 crore to Rs. 12000 crore too.

Through OROP, the widows will be benefited through arrears in lump-sum, while the others will be paid in half-yearly installments for four times. However, under OROP, the army personnel, who have taken voluntary retirement, will not be covered.
