Generally, the open heart surgery is performed by giving Anaesthesia to the patients. But if the patient’s condition do not support for it, the surgery will be done, even though such patient is awake. The same was implemented in Jamir case too.

What is the reason to do perform awake open heart surgery?

Jamir had been suffering from severe breathlessness, chronic cough and fever and was not able to walk even for short distances, for quite some time. His main valve in the heart was ‘critically narrowed’, which is not allowing the blood to flow from one chamber of the heart to another. It is thus resulting in a severe pulmonary arterial hypertension, which can lead to death. Along with this, as the patient had Bronchitis, it ruled out the use of general anaesthesia.

After knowing this condition, the surgeons felt that, Jamir has to be operated awake and so did it. The heart completely stopped its beating and lungs were not breathing, but the patient was still able to talk to the doctors during the surgery, and also watch the way his heart is being operated, on the monitor opposite to him.
