High Court tells Google, Facebook to respect Indian Law

The Delhi High Court made it clear to Google and Facebook that as long as they are here, they better follow the rules. Our rules.

It doesn't matter that the firms are foreign companies, they still have comply with Indian rules, the court ordered. The search engine and social networking site have flouted domestic rules by allowing minors below 18 years to open accounts. Minors are prohibited to enter into such agreements under the Indian Majority Act, Indian Contract act and the Information and Technology Act.

Moreover, the government departments including Indian Railways and Delhi Police are barred from creating social networking accounts under the law. Thee court, therefore, urged the Central Government to keep an eye on the sites and ensure compliance with rules, stating that the firms are bound by the rule of law in this country.

Google and Facebook will also have to cough up taxes for the income they generated through operations in India. Both firms will also need to display contact details of grievance officers on their websites.
