Prakash Karat re-elected as CPM Gen Sec

CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat is going to serve another term as the general secretary.  This is his third consecutive time to get re-elected for this post at 20th CPM congress in Kozhikode of Kerala.  Since this has been third consecutive time for Karat, necessary amendments had been made to party’s code to make a rule that an individual can be elected as thrice consecutively for the said post.

Notably, this is going to be the final chance for Karat to be the general secretary of CPM although there’s a rule that a person can be elected even fourth time in case three fourth of the party members support the candidate. While re-electing him as general secretary, the all India CPM meet has called upon its members and activists to strengthen the party.

It may be noted that Prakash Karat took up the charge as the general secretary of CPM for the first time in 2005 at the all India meet in Delhi.  He continued to be in the post for the consecutive second time and this was announced in Coimbatore’s all India meet.  The recent all India meet in Kerala has decided to hold all India meeting once in three years in normal conditions.  The meetings that were started on Wednesday were concluded on Monday.(Phani)
