Ongole breed animals being smuggled abroad; BJP demands CBI probe

BJP state president G. Kishan Reddy sought a CBI probe into the smuggling of Ongole breed of bulls and buffaloes from AP into other countries.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Kirankumar reddy, Kishan Reddy alleged the Ongole breed of bulls and buffaloes are being smuggled abroad via Kolkata.

“The animals are being taken to Kolkata via Visakhapatnam and from there to Bangladesh. Ultimately, they are being smuggled into Brazil, Switzerland and other European destinations for their semen and genetic code. The smuggling of these valued animals must be probed by CBI,” he demanded in his letter.

Kishan Reddy told the CM that people at Nakkapalli in Visakhapatnam district had intercepted a container containing 124 Ongole breed of bulls and buffaloes worth Rs. 6 Cr on Feb 5. Unscrupulous elements are smuggling them into foreign countries for the sake of money, he alleged.

Kishan Reddy said in his letter that the hide of one of the Ongole breed varieties is worth around Rs.3 lakh and even the horns also would more or less have the same value. “The bones of the bulls had special chemical compositions and have medicinal values. Some of the animals are being smuggled into Arab countries too for using the bones into medicines,” he charged. (JUBS)
