CBI submits the chargesheet on OMC scam today

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is has filed the chargesheet in the illegal iron ore mining case involving Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) of former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy before the designated CBI court at Hyderabad, today.

The chargesheet was filed in the special CBI court in Nampally under sections, 120B, 409, 420, 468, 471, ICC 13(2), RW 13(1) (D). The chargesheet was submitted in ten boxes to the court.

The charge sheet names Janardhana Reddy, his brother-in-law and OMC managing director B.V. Srinivasa Reddy and former director of mines V.D. Rajagopal as the accused. They are all lodged in Chanchalguda Central Jail in Hyderabad. CBI has not named the IAS officer Y Srilakshmi as the apex agency is yet to get the permission from central government to prosecute her.

CBI sources said the names of Srilakshmi and other accused might be included in the supplementary charge sheet at a later date. The accused have been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, theft, criminal trespass, breach of trust by public servant and forgery.

CBI joint director V V Laxminarayana is heading the investigation into the illegal mining allegedly resorted to by OMC using the lease areas granted to the company in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh bordering Karnataka. The investigative agency had also looked into the role of senior officials and people in the state government in helping Janardhana Reddy carry on with illegal mining apart from violations they committed in granting the leases.

The filing of the chargesheet, a voluminous effort running into thousands of pages, has come a day before the mandatory 90-day period ends as the prime accused Janardhana Reddy and with his relative and managing director of OMC B V Srinivas Reddy were arrested by the CBI on September 5.
