Surya editor joins Gali in Chanchalguda jail

SuryaediotOn the orders of the CBI special court at Nampally in Hyderabad, CBI today arrested Mr Nukarapu Suryaprakasa rao, editor and owner of the Telugu daily ‘Surya’ for cheating the Vijaya Bank to the tune of Rs 2.94 Cr in 1994. He is now lodged in the Chanchalguda jail. Earlier, the court rejected his bail plea.

In fact, CBI arrested him on Wednesday and produced him in the special court but on the request of the accused, the court granted him one day for surrender on furnishing a personal surety for Rs. 25, 000. The judge directed him to surrender today to the CBI when the court opens. The court gave him freedom for one day based on his plea that he needed time to surrender as he was having health problems.

As per the condition, he came to the court today at 10.30 am and applied for bail on medical grounds but the court rejected his bail plea and directed the CBI to take him into custody. The CBI sleuths then arrested him and sent him to the Chanchalguda jail.

The CBI has registered a case against him under sections 120 B and 420 after the officers of the Ananthapuram Vijaya Bank lodged a complaint against him in 1999 for cheating the bank.

The lawyers of Suryaprakasa Rao moved high court on Wednesday seeking a stay on the arrest but the high court dismissed his plea saying that it didn’t want to interfere with the work of the CBI.
