HC questions govt on security withdrawal to leaders

ap-high-courtThe AP High Court (HC) on Monday directed the state government to submit with in a week the reasons for withdrawing security to several leaders in Kadapa district at a time when by polls are taking place in the district.

Dealing with a batch of writ petitions filed by the supporters of YSR Congress chief YS Jaganmohan reddy, Justice Asutosh Mahantha ordered restoration of security given earlier to Rayalaseema Rashtra Samithi president Kuncham Venkata Subba Reddy and directed the state to file its counter in all other cases by Monday.

Venkata Subba Reddy, Prasad Reddy, vice-chairman of Proddutur municipality and Bhumana Karunakara Reddy, former chairman of the TTD filed different petitions in the court challenging withdrawal of their security. Venkata Maheswara Reddy, a local leader of the Kadapa town, also approached the court saying that his application seeking security was long pending with the police.

They alleged in their petitions that security was withdrawn to them ever since they began supporting YSR Congress party president YS Jaganmohan reddy.

Dealing with the petitions, the Judge asked the government to submit with in a week the basis on which security is given or withdrawn to political leaders. The petitioners told the court that authorities had unlawfully withdrawn security for them despite the existence of danger to their lives from political rivals.

Advocate general A. Sudarsan Reddy told the court that the security committee reviews the threat perceptions of leaders once every six months and takes decisions accordingly. He gave the court a list of such revisions effected all over the state. The judge however pointed out that the review in the case of Kuncham Venkata Subba Reddy was taken within just two months. Why is it so, the judge asked and immediately ordered restoration of security to him.
