Dunki Story
Rajkumar Hirani has carved a special place in the hearts of moviegoers with his unique storytelling that evokes deep emotions. He is a director who captivates audiences with his compelling narratives, without relying on flashy dialogue or visual effects. Now, after a hiatus of five years, Hirani returns to the big screen with his first collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan. However, the question remains: in a year dominated by action-packed blockbusters, will a story about illegal immigrants resonate with audiences? Let's discover the answer.
The term "Dunki" refers to those who attempt to enter a country through illegal means. Hirani's tale begins in Punjab and takes us on a global journey, from London to the Middle East. Hardy Singh (played by Shah Rukh Khan) encounters a group of misfits who share a common dream of reaching London someday. Although they were born in India and have a deep connection to their homeland's culture, their hearts flutter at the mere mention of Big Ben. Yet, the path to London is far from easy.
Dunki Analysis
The journey is filled with difficult tests and exams that demand the team's English proficiency for the necessary visa. After failing the language test, the group opts for the less conventional path, one that guarantees their destination. A tragic event strengthens their determination and resilience to reach London by any means necessary.
While SRK remains the main attraction, Hirani ensures that the supporting cast has ample opportunity to shine. Hirani's expertise lies in his writing and dialogue. The first half of Dunki is intricate and subtle, with the signature Hirani touch of feel-good humor and a simplistic approach.
Performance
Vicky Kaushal delivers a fantastic performance as Sukhi, and the writers have given his character depth despite his brief role. He is composed yet explosive, displaying anger when necessary. Taapsee Pannu seizes every opportunity to shine, particularly in her impeccable comedic timing with SRK.
Similarly, Anil Grover and Vikram Kochher, who portray the other members of team Dunki, excel in their respective roles. Shah Rukh skillfully embodies both the young and old versions of Hardy, utilizing his charm to its fullest extent.
On the other hand, Dunki's second half is lacking in strength and is unnecessarily long. The storyline wanders and the comedy falls flat. Additionally, the climax of Dunki is not as enjoyable as Hirani's other works. In an attempt to emphasize emotions, the filmmaker prolongs scenes and adds unnecessary weight to an already heavy cast.
While Dunki may not reach the same level as 3 Idiots or PK, it still manages to entertain and leave viewers with a heartwarming and comforting feeling as they exit the theater. Furthermore, what better way to conclude the year than to be charmed once again by SRK on the big screen?
Dunki Final Word
Dunki is the weakest work of Rajkumar Hirani till date and it will end up as an average flick at the box-office. All the actors delivered their best.
