Bond beverages: Shaken not stirred

You can associate all bond movies with enthralling action, lots of gadgets, bond girls and that is not the end of the list. Every Bond fanatic would undoubtedly point out to Bond's drinking habits.

Over the 22 films, when the secret agent is not on a mission you see him cooling off with a bond girl or with his alcohol in the stem glasses. Recently the trend has been changing from the stem glasses as the star developed a palate for other liquors and eschewed cocktails.

The iconic line from Bond, "Shaken not stirred" has been first used by Bond in "Dr. No", though the popularity and acceptance has come in Goldfinger. Shaken not stirred takes you back to the image of a suited up Sean Connery asking for his glass of his favorite cocktail, Martini.

To be James Bond, you have to know how bond takes his alcohol. Bond except for the latest iterations of the movies almost preferred cocktails, Vesper, Vodka Martini or a Dry Martini.

A breach in the trend was spotted in Goldfinger where he is seen sipping redwine. Neverthless, this has not displaced his taste for Martinis as they continued to appear in subsequent Bond movies.

A few movies have shown him with wine, and the sparkling Champagne too. But bond is very specific about his liquor. He knows how exactly his Dry Martini should be made as he teaches a waiter in Casino Royale: "Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large slice of lemon-peel. Got it?"

Why Shaken and not stirred you ask? Shaking an alcoholic beverage involves filling up the shaker upto ¾ height with ice and then adding the ingredients into it. Shaking is usually done when the beverage has contents that need more than stirring to be mixed or if it is to be served chilled. Once the shaker forms the condensation droplets on the outside, the cocktail is sufficiently chilled but not watered down.

In Casino Royale, Craig in one scene swtiched to Whisky as he dumps the stemmed glasses.

It is known that the Craig has bid adieu to Martinis in his latest Bond movie, Skyfall as he embraced beer. Skyfall is slated to release in India on November 1.
