Devastating earthquake hits China

China's Gansu Province are reeling under a highly damaging earthquake that hit the province on Monday morning. Two very powerful earthquakes resulted in 47 deaths and injuries to almost 300 people.

Dingxi city experience the first earthquake with nearly 5.6 magnitude. A second earthquake hit the same area an hour later. Additionally, 371 aftershocks were also felt in the area, as per data from the Earthquake Administration of Gansu province.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquakes had a depth of 9.8 km. The quakes resulted in the collapse of 380 houses and serious damage to 5,600 houses. Some areas in Zhangxian county had been cut off from power and communications.

Rescue efforts are in place as theGansu military police sent 500 soldiers, in which 120 are specially trained for rescue operations. Several landslides and mudslides have also resulted due to the twin quakes, reported national news agency Xinhua.
