Time will stop again on June 30 for a leap second June 29, 2015 19:11

Time will stop again on June 30, but there is no need to worry, as it’s only for a nanosecond. Researchers will add a sliver of time-a leap second-to the world's clocks.Just as leap years keep our calendars lined up with Earth's revolution around the sun, leap seconds adjust for Earth's rotation. This kind of fine-tuning wasn't much of an issue before the invention of atomic clocks, whose ticks are defined by the cycling of atoms. Cesium-based clocks, one kind of atomic clock, measure the passage of time much more precisely than those based on the rotation of our planet, so adding a leap second allows astronomical time to catch up to atomic time. Most of us won't notice the addition, which happens at 23:59:59 coordinated universal time (UTC), or 7:59 p.m. ET, unless we deal in timescales shorter than a second, or if we use a computer program that crashes because it can't handle the leap second. It's happened before: The 2012 leap second brought down Reddit, Gawker Media, and Mozilla."It's a major interruption mostly because there are a lot of systems that aren't prepared to handle the leap second correctly," says Judah Levine, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado. Leap seconds occur irregularly, which makes it hard for programmers to test their fixes, he explains.Adding TimeLeap seconds don't come on a regular schedule because Earth's rotation varies, says Demetrios Matsakis, chief scientist for time services with the United States Naval Observatory in Washington D.C. Our planet is slowing down, but it does so in unpredictable ways. So some periods require more leap seconds than others. The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service continuously monitor our planet and will recommend adding leap seconds to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The ITU makes the ultimate decision on whether to add a leap second or not. - Manohar

Bangalore guy uses Desi Techniques to purify wastewater June 29, 2015 17:03

“Don’t expect a right person to come to your rescue. There is no right moment. The right person is you and the right moment is now.” Unlike many activists, who blame government for all the initiatives to take, he has come forward and contributed his part to the welfare of the society.Srinivasan Sekar, A resident of the Sarajpura Road in Bangalore owns a firm called “TerraCura” Solutions. It specializes in sustainable solutions. But his firm is not just another in the row. He tries to create a difference with his discovery that purifies wastewater and converts it into usable water. All this, he achieved through Desi methodologies. Sekar first installed a slew of water filters in his residence and that purified water, he used for household works such as gardening and washing. Sekar said a similar model has also been incorporated in Singapore, where around 30 per cent of water is processed from sewage.Sekhar uses different types of filters - ranging from charcoal to passing the water through plants, which absorb the nitrates and phosphates.“The water molecule is the most important. Even in waste water, there are different molecules other than water. So if one filters out the other molecules, all that is left is water. In fact, when I wanted to check where the waste water went eventually, I found that it would end up at a sewage treatment plant. Considering that water accumulates at such plants, with no outlet, I realized that there is no need to throw away the water and that it can be re-used,” Sekar said. The model has also been incorporated at TZ Homes, an apartment complex in Sarjapura. After having stayed in the apartment for a while, Sekar, who was a member of the apartment’s association, noticed that there were huge expenditures towards water.  “We needed at least 10 water tankers a day and had to resort to water rationing. However, we still faced water scarcity,” he said.“Measuring the water consumed by the residents was a challenge. There were continuous problems, while I wanted us to be self-sufficient. Hence, I decided to implement the model, there too.”TZ Homes have received an award from the state government in this regard, he added. In a rare coincidence, Bangalore resident has discovered techniques. - Manohar

We are ready to go any corner to fight against the imposition of section 8,” the officials warned."It would be better, if the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu concentrates on the welfare of his state people, rather than, on his self protection regarding the scams he performed.""We are ready to raise a new movement, if any trails regarding the imposition of section 8 are made.
