Japan uses German pumps for watering reactors

JapanMilitaryThe Japanese military and civilian authorities resumed efforts today to restore power to the reactors at the earthquake and tsunami-shaken Fukushima Dai-Chi nuclear power plant.

The authorities launched their efforts on Sunday but they were forced to abandon them as heavy smoke was found billowing from the plant on Monday. The efforts to restore power to the cooling towers included showering of water by the military and fire department vehicles.

The electricity department struggled to restore power supply to the units 1,2, 5 and 6 of the plant which has 6 reactors. Two German-made pumping vehicles were pressed into service for watering the overheated reactors, reports said.

The German pumping vehicles can dump 150 tonnes of water per hour from a height of 50 meters over the reactors. Meanwhile, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) officials said that conditions at Fukushima nuclear power plant have been gradually improving.
