ISRO has successfully launched the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C19) carrying India’s spy satellite RISAT-1 on Wednesday morning at 5.47 AM. This happens to be India’s first indigenous spy satellite. Few seconds after the rocket was lifted off, the chairman of Indian Space Research Organization, K Radhakrishna has declared that the mission was a success. He has said that PSLV-C19 that carried RISAT-1 has successfully put the radar imagining satellite into the orbit.

It has to be mentioned here that the weight of RISAT-1 is over1858 kilograms and happens to be the heaviest satellites that the country ever launched. The cost of building and lifting off RISAT-1 was said to be 500 crore rupees making it India’s most expensive satellite too.

The ISRO chairman has termed the mission as one of the pride moments for India. Even in bad weather, RISAT-1 will be taking high resolution pictures of earth’s surface. Notably, N Valarmathi become the first woman to head a remote sensing satellite project.  It may be noted that India earlier launched a spy satellite named RISAT-2 that was brought from Israel, but RISAT-1 is country’s indigenous project.

Meanwhile, festive atmosphere prevailed in the early hours at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota of Andhra Pradesh the moment the project became success. Everyone applauded for the successful launch of the satellite and greeted the ISRO chairman over the same. (Phani)
