Kerala Court Finds “Bunty Chor” Guilty Of Burgling NRI Businessman’s House

A local court in Thiruvanthapuram, Kerala has found the notorious thief, Devinder Singh alias Bunty Chor guilty, in a case relating to the burglary at the house of an NRI businessman, in the State’s capital.

The quantum of punishment, will be announced by the court of the chief judicial magistrate, on April 22.

Bunty, who was involved in more than 500 theft cases, managed to give police the escape on several occasions. He carried out a burglary at the high-security home, of NRI businessman Venugopalan Nair in 2013, despite the house having latest electronic surveillance devices.

The notorious criminal, had cut through the bulletproof glass door, deactivated two security alarms and close circuit television cameras and fled with an SUV worth Rs 25 lakh, a laptop, two mobile phones, a gold ring and Rs 2000 in cash, from the house of the NRI. Though he deactivated the security cameras and CCTVs, one of the cameras, hidden behind a door, caught his image, which helped the Kerala police pinpoint him. The police immediately held a special investigation team.

Bunty, later abandoned the stolen car, near Bengaluru the next day of the theft. He was arrested from Pune, two days later, with the help of Maharashtra police. He reportedly confessed to the police, during interrogation that, he had stolen the car, to take revenge on well-known Bollywood director, Dibakar Banerjee, who based his film ‘Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye’ on Bunty’s life in 2008.

When Bunty was placed in the high-security Poojapura Central Jail, saying he was suffering from acute mental illness. Though, he made several attempts to get bail, it became futile. He has even been admitted to a mental rehabilitation centre for some time as he had shown symptoms of mental retardation. Later it was found that he did not have any mental illness, so he was sent back to jail.

The international criminal had robbed luxury items, from cities like New Delhi, Chennai and Bengaluru. He also participated in the television reality show, Bigg Boss in 2010 when he was out on bail.
