Jute Mill Workers Protest in Guntur

In a combined agitation the workers of Bajrang Jute Mill held a massive procession in Guntur on Monday. They demanded immediate reopening of the mill which was shut down a year back.

More than 2,000 workers along with all-party delegation supported the protest. They took out a rally from the mill and later submitted a memorandum to Collector Kantilal Dande.

Demanding immediate action, the jute mill trade union leader Lella Appireddy (YSRCP) said that the mill should be reopened immedietly and warned that the workers would court arrest as they had been thrown out of their jobs.

“This is the only jute mill in the State which has been operating successfully. The management is not even the owner of the property and it had entered into an agreement with a real estate company to sell the property. Even the assurance of the Chief Minister that the mill would be reopened had gone in vain,’’ said Mr. Reddy.

Former MLA K.S. Lakshman Rao, senior advocate Y. Koteswara Rao, BJP leader K.V. Subba Rao and others were present.

The mill was started in 1935 and after a brief lock out period was acquired by Davu Gopal Lunani and his family in 1994. The family also owns jute mills in Eluru and Raipur.
