High Court corners police, on helmet rule

The Hyderabad High Court has directed the Telangana government to file a report explaining the action taken against officers, who had failed to implement the helmet rule.

Though the helmet rule is already there in the state, it is known that the government is not implementing it strictly. Regarding this, the High Court asked the reasons and one of the police officials said that, chain snatching cases are increasing due to the usage of the helmet.

But the Court denied the arguments of the official, saying that, avoiding helmet, would lead to a greater loss.

With regard to the compulsory helmet rule, a division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justice S.V. Bhatt, expressed their dissatisfaction at an action-taken report (ATR), submitted by the authorities.

Upon the failure of the implementation of compulsory helmet rule strictly, the bench threatened to pass orders for action against the officers, after citing that it saw a number of two wheelers on the road, driving the vehicles, without wearing the helmets.

In 2010, Vudataneni Rama Rao of Ranga Reddy district, filed a petition. He sought to declare as illegal, when the officials failed in implementing the rule strictly. The bench dealt with the same petition yesterday.

On the other hand, even the argument of the police was appreciated by certain sections of the public, as even the chain snatching cases are increasing in huge number, in the cities. But avoiding helmet for it, is surely a bigger threat.

So, it would be better, if the officials think over a possible alternative, so that, both reduction of chain snatching cases and compulsory helmet rule, would be implemented.
